SVG is vector — infinitely scalable, but only useful where SVG is supported. Rasterising to PNG produces a fixed-size image that works in every editor, document, and platform.

Why convert SVG to PNG?

  • Embed icons in apps, presentations, and platforms that don't support SVG.
  • Use in image editors that work pixel-by-pixel (Photoshop, GIMP).
  • Pin a specific resolution for print or display contexts.

What is the difference between SVG and PNG?

Does converting SVG to PNG lose quality?

Rasterization is a rendering step, and the output can only contain what the renderer can resolve. Self-contained SVGs — plain shapes, paths, gradients, inline styles — convert most faithfully. Anything that depends on the outside world is at risk: webfonts that are not embedded, images linked by URL, external stylesheets, and scripts will simply be missing or substituted in the PNG. The cleaner and more portable the SVG export, the closer the PNG matches what you saw in the browser.

The result is a snapshot at one fixed pixel size, and that changes how you treat the file. Enlarging the PNG afterwards interpolates pixels and blurs — the infinite scaling belonged to the SVG, not to its raster copy. Keep the SVG as the master; if a bigger raster is ever needed, scale the artwork in a vector editor like Inkscape or Figma and convert again rather than upsizing the PNG.

The most reliable preparation step happens before uploading: convert any text in the artwork to outlines in your design tool. Outlined text is pure geometry and renders identically on any machine, whereas live text gambles on font availability at render time. Gradients, strokes, and masks rasterize dependably; heavily filtered effects like blurs are the other area worth eyeballing in the output.

What can go wrong converting SVG to PNG?

  • Text renders in the wrong font — The SVG references a font that was not available at render time, so a fallback substituted. Convert text to outlines in the design tool and re-export the SVG before converting.
  • The PNG came out blank or missing parts — The SVG likely leans on external resources or scripts that a converter will not fetch or run. Re-export it as a self-contained file — images embedded as data URIs, styles inlined.
  • The logo looks fuzzy when I scale the PNG up — The PNG is a fixed-resolution snapshot; enlarging it can only interpolate. Enlarge the artboard in a vector editor first and convert again, or use the SVG directly where it is supported.
  • Blur and shadow effects look different from the browser — SVG filter support varies between rendering engines, so complex filters are the least portable part of the format. Flatten or simplify the effects in your design tool if the exact look matters.
