WebP is Google's efficient web image format, but not every editor or app accepts it. Converting WebP to PNG gives you a universally supported, lossless image with full transparency support.

Does converting WEBP to PNG lose quality?

This is the right conversion when the image is about to be worked on. A PNG working copy survives any number of open-edit-save rounds in Photoshop, GIMP, or Figma without accumulating damage, which makes it the safe intermediate for compositing, annotation, and retouching — jobs where a lossy format would quietly erode the picture with every save along the way.

Transparency transfers perfectly. WebP and PNG both store a full 8-bit alpha channel, so semi-transparent drop shadows, feathered edges, and anti-aliased outlines land in the PNG exactly as they were — nothing is hardened to on/off transparency and nothing is flattened. For logos and cutout graphics pulled from the web, this is the only common conversion target that loses literally nothing.

Two caveats set expectations. If the source WebP was saved lossy — most web images are — any softness or edge noise it already carries becomes a permanent part of the PNG, so check text edges before adopting the file as a master. And if the WebP is animated, a single frame comes through; PNG has no mainstream animation story, so motion needs a GIF or video target instead.

What can go wrong converting WEBP to PNG?

  • Only the first frame of my animation came through — PNG is a still format, so an animated WebP contributes one frame. Convert to GIF to keep the animation playable in ordinary apps.
  • The file I grabbed from a website still says .webp — Sites often deliver WebP regardless of the filename in the address bar. Download the image to disk, then upload that file here and download the converted PNG it returns.
  • Colors look slightly different in my editor — The editor may be ignoring or misreading the color profile rather than the pixels being wrong. Compare in a browser, and assign sRGB in the editor if the browser version looks correct.
