File conversion for AI agents and developers

Give Claude, Cursor, VS Code, Windsurf, ChatGPT or n8n the ability to convert documents, images, audio, video, archives and ebooks. One hosted MCP server, one REST API, your normal account: no API keys.

MCP server

Endpoint: https://file-convert.online/api/mcp/v1/mcp
Transport: Streamable HTTP. Authentication: OAuth 2.1, the standard MCP login.

There is nothing to copy. The client reads https://file-convert.online/api/mcp/.well-known/oauth-protected-resource, registers itself with our authorization server (https://auth.file-convert.online/realms/fileconvert) and opens a browser window where you sign in with your file-convert.online account, the same one you use on this site. The client keeps its own token and refreshes it; each client is a separate session, so sign in once per machine. list_formats and get_upload_url work without signing in.

Add it to Claude Code with one command and finish the sign-in in the browser:

claude mcp add --transport http fileconvert https://file-convert.online/api/mcp/v1/mcp

Or to Cursor, Windsurf and any client that reads an mcpServers block:

{
  "mcpServers": {
    "fileconvert": {
      "url": "https://file-convert.online/api/mcp/v1/mcp"
    }
  }
}

Claude Desktop, VS Code, ChatGPT and n8n are covered step by step in the client setup guide. Once connected, ask in plain language: “Convert this DOCX to PDF and give me the link.”

Tools

convert_file

Fetch a file by URL, upload it and start a conversion in one call.

upload_file

Upload bytes the agent holds locally (base64, up to 25 MiB).

start_conversion

Convert an already uploaded file (source and target named by extension).

get_job_status

Pending, Processing, Completed or Failed, with the reason.

get_download_url

A shareable link to the result, valid until the file expires.

get_balance

Remaining credits of the signed-in account.

list_formats

The full catalogue, optionally filtered by category.

get_upload_url

Raw multipart upload instructions for agents that run HTTP themselves.

Formats are named by extension (png, docx, mp3); conversions run within a category. Every error is written for an agent to act on: no credits points to the pricing page, an unknown format lists the closest matches, a rate limit says to back off.

REST API

The same capabilities over plain HTTP, described by an OpenAPI 3 document at https://file-convert.online/api/mcp/openapi.json. Upload, start, poll, download; authentication, rate limits and retention are documented alongside. Requests that spend credits carry an Authorization: Bearer access token issued by the authorization server above. Quickstarts exist for curl, Go and Python.

# Keyless discovery; tool calls that spend credits need a bearer from the OAuth login.
curl -s https://file-convert.online/api/mcp/v1/mcp \
  -H "Content-Type: application/json" \
  -H "Accept: application/json, text/event-stream" \
  -d '{"jsonrpc":"2.0","id":1,"method":"tools/list"}'

Pricing and limits

Conversions are metered by converter run time: 1 credit per started 10 seconds, scaled by the pod size the job ran on, with a minimum of 1 credit per job. An estimate is held when the job starts (1 credit for images, documents, audio and archives, 4 for video and ebooks) and settled to the metered charge on completion. A 4-second image costs 1 credit. Free accounts are topped up to 10 free credits each day; paid plans add monthly allowances and higher per-minute rate limits. Results stay downloadable for about an hour by default and up to 14 days on request.
