WebP supports both lossless and lossy compression with transparency, like PNG, but with much smaller files. For modern sites, PNG → WebP is the right move whenever browser support allows.

Does converting PNG to WEBP lose quality?

WebP was designed for exactly the material people keep in PNG: screenshots, interface graphics, logos, and illustrations with large uniform areas and clean edges. That content re-encodes extremely well, and in a browser the two files render indistinguishably. The visual risk sits at the fine end — hairline strokes, small anti-aliased text, subtle textures — so zoom to 100% on the busiest region of the output once before wiring it into a site.

Think of this as producing a delivery format, not replacing your original. The sensible pipeline keeps the PNG as the master and serves the WebP: browsers get the smaller file, while print vendors, older desktop editors, and email tools — where WebP support is still unreliable — can be handed the PNG on demand. Since the master stays untouched, you can regenerate the WebP any time the web copy needs refreshing.

Alpha behaves exactly as you would hope: partial transparency, soft shadows, and feathered edges all survive, so overlay graphics keep working on any page background. Conversion here needs no account, and both the upload and the result are wiped from the server within an hour — worth knowing when the graphics belong to a client project.

What can go wrong converting PNG to WEBP?

  • The WebP came out bigger than my PNG — Very small images and PNGs already reduced to a tiny palette sometimes cannot be beaten, since WebP's container overhead outweighs the savings. Those files are fine left as PNG.
  • My email platform or old editor refuses the WebP — WebP support outside browsers is still inconsistent — HTML email in particular is unsafe territory. Keep serving WebP on the web and use the PNG for email and legacy tools.
  • Fine text in the image looks slightly soft — That is the signature of lossy re-encoding on pixel-precise content. For UI mockups and text-critical captures where every pixel must hold, stick with the PNG.
