Migrating WMV files into MKV rehouses Windows Media-era video in an open container that media servers and modern players prefer. Done as a stream copy, it freezes the original picture untouched while shedding the ASF wrapper's limitations.

Why convert WMV to MKV?
- Serve old recordings through Plex or Kodi, which navigate MKV far better than ASF-based files.
- Attach subtitles and proper chapter marks to corporate or family videos that WMV could not carry them in.
- Future-proof a Windows-era archive before WMV playback support becomes even scarcer.
Tip: MKV can store the original WMV9 and WMA streams unchanged — a fast lossless rewrap — though some TVs then balk at the codecs, so re-encode to H.264 when broad device playback matters more than preservation.
