Why convert modern MKV to old-school AVI?

Almost always for a legacy device — old smart TVs, DVD players with USB, or car systems that predate MKV support and only list AVI in their manual. For modern devices, MKV to MP4 is the better conversion.

What gets lost going from MKV to AVI?

MKV features AVI never had: multiple audio tracks, soft subtitles, and chapters don't carry over — typically one audio track survives and subtitle tracks are dropped. Extract subtitles to .srt first if you need them.

Will the AVI be bigger than the MKV?

Often yes — MKVs usually hold efficient H.264/H.265 video, while AVI-compatible codecs need more bitrate for the same quality. Expect a size increase as the price of legacy compatibility.
