Converting WMV to AVI moves Windows Media video into the broadly-compatible AVI container, useful for older editors and players that handle AVI but not WMV.

Why convert WMV to AVI?
- Import WMV footage into legacy editing software.
- Play on hardware and apps that support AVI more reliably.
- Standardise mixed Windows-era footage into one container.
What is the difference between WMV and AVI?
| WMV | AVI | |
|---|---|---|
| Container lineage | Microsoft ASF wrapper, tied to Windows Media | Video for Windows era, vendor-neutral in practice |
| Typical codecs inside | WMV7–WMV9 video with WMA audio | Flexible — MPEG-4 family video with MP3 or PCM audio |
| Tool support today | Windows-centric; weak in cross-platform editors | Read by VirtualDub-era tools, analysis and lab software |
| Streaming features | Built for 2000s Windows Media streaming | None — a plain local playback container |
| Best for | Old Windows Media archives as they are | Feeding legacy editing and processing pipelines |
Does converting WMV to AVI lose quality?
Both the video and audio streams are re-encoded in this conversion — AVI tooling generally can't pass WMV9 through untouched — so this adds a lossy generation on top of the WMV's own compression. For a one-time bridge into an editing tool that's fine; do the conversion once and work from the AVI rather than round-tripping between the two formats.
Old WMV screen recordings and lectures often carry low frame rates and small resolutions, and those characteristics survive unchanged: the AVI will be exactly as sharp as the WMV was, no better. A modest size increase is normal, because the encoding inside the AVI is less specialised for that content than WMV9 was.
If the real goal is playback on modern devices rather than a legacy tool chain, convert the WMV to MP4 instead — AVI is the right target only when specific old software demands it.
What can go wrong converting WMV to AVI?
- The conversion fails on a video bought from an old online store — Purchased WMV files from 2000s stores often carry Windows Media DRM, which blocks decoding entirely. We cannot and do not remove DRM — only unprotected recordings convert.
- Audio drifts out of sync toward the end of a long recording — Long WMV captures with variable-bitrate audio can accumulate drift when re-encoded. Splitting the source into shorter parts before converting keeps each segment tightly synced.
- My editing tool opens the AVI but shows a black picture — Very old Video-for-Windows software only decodes codecs installed on that machine. Install a current codec pack on the legacy system, or use its import/decompress option rather than direct timeline playback.
