WebM is the format used by YouTube downloads, WebRTC, and OBS streams — open and royalty-free, but not universally supported. MP4 plays everywhere, on every device.

Why convert WEBM to MP4?

  • Edit downloaded YouTube/Vimeo content in software that prefers MP4 input.
  • Play on iOS, older Android, smart TVs, and streaming devices.
  • Embed clips on platforms that block WebM in their video players.

What is the difference between WEBM and MP4?

WEBMMP4
Container originGoogle, 2010 — a constrained Matroska profile for the webISO standard container from the MPEG family
Typical codecs insideVP8, VP9, or AV1 video with Opus or Vorbis audioH.264/H.265 video with AAC audio
LicensingFully royalty-free by designPatent-licensed codecs (handled by device makers, not users)
Hardware decodingGood in browsers and recent chips; spotty on TVs and editorsDedicated H.264 decoders in virtually every device since ~2010
Best forEmbedding on web pages, browser screen recordingEditing, offline playback, and sharing outside the browser

Does converting WEBM to MP4 lose quality?

Nothing in a WebM can be copied into an MP4 — the container's codec whitelist (VP8/VP9/AV1 video, Opus/Vorbis audio) has zero overlap with MP4's usual payloads, so both video and audio are always fully transcoded. Resolution and frame rate are preserved through the process; a 1080p 60 fps screen capture stays 1080p 60 fps.

Expect the MP4 to come out somewhat larger than the source, sometimes by 20-40%. That is codec arithmetic, not waste: VP9 compresses more tightly than H.264, so representing the same picture in the older codec simply takes more bits. One quirk to know: VP9 WebM can carry an alpha (transparency) channel, and MP4 cannot — transparent areas come out on a solid background.

There is a hidden benefit for browser screen recordings. Files from MediaRecorder-based tools are often written without a proper duration header, which is why they show 0:00 and refuse to seek. Conversion rebuilds the file with a complete index, so the MP4 seeks and scrubs normally.

What can go wrong converting WEBM to MP4?

  • My screen recording shows no duration and won't seek — That's a known trait of browser-recorded WebM files, not corruption. Convert it as-is — the resulting MP4 gets a proper duration and seek index.
  • The MP4 is bigger than the WebM I uploaded — Normal: H.264 needs more bitrate than VP9 for the same quality, so a size increase is expected. The trade is compatibility, not efficiency.
  • The transparent background in my animation turned black — MP4 has no alpha channel, so transparency cannot survive this conversion. Keep the WebM for web overlay use and treat the MP4 as a flattened copy.
  • A long recording exceeds the 50 MB free limit — Hour-long meeting or webinar captures easily pass 50 MB even in efficient VP9. Record in shorter takes, or trim the WebM locally before uploading the part you need.
