When is RTF the right export from LibreOffice?

When the receiving software is unknown or old: RTF opens in more programs than any other formatted-text format, including editors from the early 90s. For known-modern recipients, DOCX or PDF each do a more capable job.

What does the ODT lose on the way to RTF?

Styles become direct formatting, cross-references and fields freeze into text, and ZIP compression is gone, so files grow. The visible document survives largely intact; the structural machinery under it does not.

Can the RTF be brought back into ODT cleanly later?

The text and basic formatting round-trip fine, but converting back does not resurrect styles or fields that were flattened. Keep the original ODT as the working copy and treat RTF exports as one-way deliverables.

When an ODT document must open on machines without LibreOffice, converting it to RTF yields formatted text nearly anything can edit. The trade is clear: RTF's reach is unmatched among editable formats, while styles and fields flatten into plain formatting on the way.
