Is RTF a downgrade from DOC?

For everyday documents, barely - both formats come from the same era, and RTF represents fonts, styles, tables, lists, and images comfortably. What RTF cannot hold is anything executable or deeply structural: macros, embedded OLE objects, document protection.

Which programs open RTF that can't open DOC?

WordPad on every Windows since 95, TextEdit on macOS, and many lightweight editors and CMS import filters that never implemented the binary Word format. That breadth is usually the entire reason for this conversion.

Does an RTF keep tables and lists from the original DOC?

Yes - RTF has native table and list structures, so ordinary layouts carry over intact. Deeply nested tables and multi-level list numbering are the weak spots; a quick visual check covers both.

Convert a binary Word DOC file into portable RTF so the text and basic formatting open in WordPad, TextEdit, and any word processor. Both formats date from the same Microsoft era, which is why bold, fonts, lists, and simple tables cross over with little drama.

Why convert DOC to RTF?

Open Word content on bare Windows or macOS installs - WordPad and TextEdit read RTF without Office.
Feed document text into CMS and publishing tools whose rich-text import understands RTF but not binary DOC.
Share with recipients whose software you know nothing about; RTF is the lowest common denominator of formatted text.

Tip: Macros, embedded OLE objects, and password protection do not survive - RTF carries formatted text, tables, and pictures, and nothing executable.
