Moving RTF up to DOCX brings a rich-text file into Word's modern XML format, with smaller files and full Microsoft 365 support. RTF is a 1987 design that stores images inefficiently and predates styles-based editing; DOCX fixes both while keeping the content identical.

Why convert RTF to DOCX?
- Shrink bloated files dramatically - DOCX compresses its contents, and embedded images stop being hex-encoded text.
- Unlock live collaboration, comment threads, and tracked changes in Word for the web.
- Modernise RTF output from legal, medical, and database systems into today's default document format.
Tip: Everything RTF can express, DOCX can hold, so this direction is effectively lossless - the reverse trip is where features fall away.
