MOBI is Amazon's older Kindle format, slowly being phased out in favour of AZW3 and EPUB. Converting MOBI to EPUB future-proofs your library and enables reading on non-Amazon devices.

Does converting MOBI to EPUB lose quality?

Because MOBI is the simpler format, this conversion runs uphill in fidelity terms: everything MOBI can express, EPUB can too, so text, emphasis, chapter structure, and internal links come through with essentially nothing lost. Don't expect the book to gain polish it never had, though — a MOBI's plain styling becomes an equally plain EPUB, which your reading app then dresses in its own default typography.

Images are copied out at whatever resolution the MOBI stored, and files prepared for early Kindles often carried heavily downscaled versions to save space. They display fine but can look soft on a modern tablet — there is no lost detail to recover. The cover normally transfers as proper EPUB cover art; where the original only had a cover page, some apps show a blank tile until one is set.

Metadata is the sparse spot. MOBI reliably holds title and author, and both land in the EPUB, but the fields modern libraries lean on — series, ISBN, description, publisher — were rarely written into old MOBI files at all. The conversion can only carry what exists, so budget a minute of metadata editing if the book is joining an organised collection.

What can go wrong converting MOBI to EPUB?

  • The converted EPUB lost its cover image — Some MOBI files store the cover only as a first-page image rather than tagged cover art, and the tag is what EPUB apps show in the library. Set the cover in Calibre — it takes seconds and fixes every reading app at once.
  • My file has a .prc extension, not .mobi — PRC is the same Mobipocket container under an older extension, common on files from the format's early years. Rename it to .mobi and convert normally.
  • Paragraph indents and spacing look odd in my reading app — Old MOBI files hard-code first-line indents and spacing from a different era of screens. Most EPUB apps let you override paragraph styling in their display settings; for a permanent fix, adjust the styles once in Calibre's editor.
