AZW3 (KF8) is Amazon's proprietary Kindle format. Converting to EPUB frees your books from the Kindle ecosystem so they open on Kobo, Nook, Apple Books, and any standards-based ereader.

Why convert AZW3 to EPUB?
- Read purchased or personal Kindle books on non-Amazon devices.
- Edit and re-style in Calibre, Sigil, or other EPUB tools.
- Future-proof your library in an open, widely supported format.
Tip: AZW3 files protected by Amazon DRM must have that DRM removed by the rights holder before conversion — we convert DRM-free files only.
What is the difference between AZW3 and EPUB?
| AZW3 | EPUB | |
|---|---|---|
| Ownership | Amazon proprietary (Kindle Format 8) | Open standard maintained by the W3C |
| Where it opens | Kindle hardware and Kindle apps only | Kobo, Nook, PocketBook, Apple Books, Calibre — everywhere else |
| Internals | HTML and CSS in Amazon's container | HTML and CSS in an open, ZIP-based container |
| Typography | Embedded fonts and modern CSS | Equivalent support — styling carries over |
| Best for | Staying inside the Kindle ecosystem | Open libraries, editing, device freedom |
Does converting AZW3 to EPUB lose quality?
What you lose is mostly services, not content. X-Ray, Whispersync positions, and Goodreads integration are features of Amazon's platform rather than of the AZW3 file, so no conversion could carry them anywhere. Inside the file itself, embedded fonts, drop caps, and footnote markup all have EPUB equivalents and transfer cleanly; a handful of Kindle-specific CSS extensions are simply ignored by other readers without breaking the page.
Covers and metadata come through dependably: the cover shows as library art in EPUB apps, and title, author, and any series information written by tools like Calibre stay attached. One field worth a glance is the author-sort value — if your new app shelves the book under the author's first name, edit that single field and the library ordering falls back into place.
Mind the extension before uploading: this conversion is for .azw3 files. The older plain .azw extension is usually a Mobipocket-era file wearing Amazon branding, better served by the MOBI to EPUB conversion, and .kfx is a newer, structurally different Amazon format altogether. Files up to 50 MB convert free with no signup — comfortably above the size of almost any novel.
What can go wrong converting AZW3 to EPUB?
- Popup footnotes became plain jump links — The notes are intact and linked in both directions; whether they pop up depends on the reading app. Apple Books and recent Kobo firmware display popovers, while simpler apps jump to the note text and back.
- The book shows no page numbers on my Kobo — Reflowable EPUBs have no fixed pages, so readers show progress as percentages or computed page counts. Nothing was lost in conversion — AZW3 had no real pages either; the Kindle was computing its 'locations' the same way.
- My file is .kfx and won't convert — KFX is a newer Amazon format with a different internal structure, not an AZW3 under another name, so renaming the extension won't help. This conversion needs a genuine .azw3 file (or use the EPUB directly if you have one).
