EPUB reflows for any screen; PDF preserves a fixed page layout. Converting EPUB to PDF is what you do when you want to print, annotate, or read on a tablet that handles PDFs better than EPUB.

Why convert EPUB to PDF?

  • Print specific chapters or the whole ebook with proper page numbers.
  • Read on devices and apps that don't support EPUB (most native PDF readers).
  • Keep a fixed-layout archival copy.

Tip: PDFs from EPUB don't reflow — text won't resize on small screens. For tablet/phone reading, keep EPUB; for printing or preservation, convert.

What is the difference between EPUB and PDF?

Does converting EPUB to PDF lose quality?

The EPUB's navigation doesn't vanish when the pages freeze. Chapter entries become PDF bookmarks in the viewer's sidebar, and internal links — cross-references and footnote markers — turn into clickable jumps between pages. Footnotes themselves stay wherever the EPUB placed them, usually the end of a chapter, with working links in both directions, which reads a little differently from a print book but keeps every note one tap away.

The cover becomes the first page at full size, and inline illustrations keep their place in the text, scaled to the page width. Title and author are written into the PDF's document properties, so the file identifies itself correctly in Acrobat and preview panes. What no conversion can add is design: a novel typeset for reflow produces a clean but plain page, closer to a manuscript than to the publisher's print edition.

Treat the PDF as an export for a specific job — printing a chapter, filing a page-stable copy, sharing with someone who has no reading app — and keep the EPUB as the master. The freeze is one-directional: converting the PDF back later recovers the text but not this exact pagination. Fixed-layout EPUBs (children's books, comics) are the special case, since their pre-designed pages map onto PDF naturally.

What can go wrong converting EPUB to PDF?

  • Conversion fails on a book downloaded from my store library — The conversion fails because the book is DRM-protected; we cannot and do not remove DRM. Only DRM-free EPUBs convert — store purchases are usually locked to the account that bought them.
  • A table or image is split across two pages — Any block taller than the remaining page space has to break somewhere, and there's no way to nudge individual elements. For books built around large tables or figures, the reflowable EPUB is genuinely the better reading copy — export to PDF mainly for the prose.
  • The PDF's typeface doesn't match what my reading app showed — Your app was substituting its own font preferences. The PDF uses the fonts the EPUB actually specifies — or a standard serif when it specifies none — so the PDF reflects the book's own formatting rather than the app's.
