Turning MKV into WMV re-encodes an open multi-track container into Windows Media Video for aging WMV-only PCs and media players. It is strictly a backward-compatibility move — everything about WMV is older than what a typical MKV holds.

Why convert MKV to WMV?
- Play movie files on an Xbox 360, early smart TV, or 2000s media extender whose format list stops at WMV and MPEG.
- Provide footage to a corporate environment standardized on Windows Media Player 11, where installing codecs needs admin rights nobody has.
- Insert video into old Microsoft tools — Movie Maker projects, PowerPoint 2007 decks — that reject MKV outright.
Tip: H.265 and AV1 streams common in newer MKVs have no path into WMV except a slow full re-encode; if the target device also lists MP4 support, choose that instead and skip the quality hit.
