What are the row and column limits of XLS?

XLS caps out at 65,536 rows and 256 columns, versus 1,048,576 rows and 16,384 columns in XLSX. Converting a large dataset down to XLS silently truncates everything past those limits, so check your row count first.

Why does Excel show Compatibility Mode for my XLS file?

Excel is warning that the workbook is stored in the 1997-2003 binary format, which cannot hold newer features like XLOOKUP, dynamic arrays, or more than 65,536 rows. Converting to XLSX removes the banner and unlocks the full feature set.
