WebP is Google's modern format — smaller than JPG at the same quality, but not yet universally supported. Converting WebP to JPG fixes display issues on older browsers, image editors, and printing services.

Why convert WEBP to JPG?
- View WebP downloads in image viewers and editors that don't support the format.
- Print images at services and kiosks that only accept JPG.
- Embed in legacy systems, email clients, and intranets that block WebP.
What is the difference between WEBP and JPG?
| WEBP | JPG | |
|---|---|---|
| Compression | Lossy or lossless modes | Lossy only |
| Transparency | Full alpha channel | None — flattened to a background |
| Animation | Supported (animated WebP) | Still images only |
| Size at equal quality | Roughly 25–35% smaller | Larger — the cost of compatibility |
| Software support | Modern browsers and recent apps | Universal since the 1990s |
Does converting WEBP to JPG lose quality?
Most WebP files on the web were saved in lossy mode, so this conversion usually stacks a second lossy generation on top of the first. Done once, the effect is negligible — the output remains fine for viewing, printing, and documents. What you want to avoid is ping-ponging: converting the JPG back to WebP and forth again compounds artifacts each round. Convert once, keep that copy, and go back to the original WebP if you ever need to re-convert.
Any transparency in the WebP disappears here. Sticker-style cutouts, logos on transparent canvases, and images with soft alpha edges get composited onto a solid background, turning a floating graphic into a filled rectangle. That is correct behavior for JPG, not a defect — but if the cutout is the point of the image, target PNG instead and the alpha channel carries over intact.
Expect the JPG to come out somewhat larger than the WebP it came from, since JPG's older compression simply needs more bytes for the same picture. The trade is reach: the result opens in twenty-year-old software, prints at any kiosk, and embeds in systems that will never learn WebP. Uploaded files are removed from the server within an hour, so the conversion leaves nothing behind.
What can go wrong converting WEBP to JPG?
- My animated WebP turned into a single still image — JPG cannot hold animation, so only one frame survives. Convert the animated WebP to GIF to keep the motion, or to MP4 if the destination accepts video.
- The transparent background became a solid box — JPG has no alpha channel, so transparent areas must be filled. Convert WebP to PNG instead — it keeps the cutout exactly.
- Saving an image from a website gave me WebP again — Many sites serve WebP no matter what the URL looks like. Save the file to disk first, then upload that saved file here — the conversion works on the actual file, not the page.
- The JPG file is bigger than the WebP was — That is expected: WebP compresses more efficiently, so re-encoding to JPG costs bytes. You are trading size for compatibility, not losing anything to an error.
