Where did the FB2 format come from?

FictionBook 2 is an XML-based ebook format created in Russia in 2004, and it remains the standard on Russian-language digital libraries. It describes a book's structure rather than its appearance, which makes it unusually clean to convert to other formats.

Can Kindle or Kobo devices read FB2?

Kindle has no FB2 support at all, so convert to AZW3 or EPUB before transferring. PocketBook readers open FB2 natively and many Kobo models handle it too, though EPUB generally renders more reliably on both.

Do images and footnotes survive FB2 conversion?

Yes. FB2 embeds images as base64 text inside the XML and marks footnotes structurally, so converting to EPUB preserves both. The output file often ends up smaller because EPUB compresses its contents in a ZIP wrapper.
