7z uses the high-ratio LZMA2 algorithm, typically producing noticeably smaller archives than ZIP. Converting ZIP to 7Z is ideal when you want to squeeze storage or speed up large uploads.

Why convert ZIP to 7Z?

  • Significantly better compression than ZIP for large file sets.
  • Open, free format with strong AES-256 encryption support.
  • Split huge archives into volumes for easier transfer.

Tip: 7z needs 7-Zip or a compatible tool to open — it isn't built into Windows or macOS by default.

What is the difference between ZIP and 7Z?

ZIP7Z
Compression algorithmDeflate — fast and universally supportedLZMA2 — markedly higher ratios on compressible data
Built-in OS supportOpens natively on every major platformNeeds a free tool such as 7-Zip or Keka
EncryptionAES optional; weak ZipCrypto still widespreadAES-256 standard, filenames can be hidden too
Solid compressionNo — files compressed one by oneYes — related files compressed together for better ratios

Does converting ZIP to 7Z lose quality?

The gain comes from repacking, not tweaking: every file is decoded out of the ZIP and recompressed with LZMA2 from scratch, so the result doesn't depend on how aggressively the original ZIP was built. The biggest wins show up on archives holding many similar files — document revisions, exported reports, source trees — where solid compression lets repeated patterns across files share one dictionary.

Layout is preserved one-to-one: every folder, subfolder, and filename in the ZIP appears at the same path inside the 7z, Unicode names included, so extracting the new archive reproduces the original tree exactly. You also gain stricter bookkeeping — 7z records integrity checksums that let any extractor confirm the files are still intact years later, a useful property in a format chosen for long-term storage.

What can go wrong converting ZIP to 7Z?

  • Nothing happens when my colleague double-clicks the 7z on a Mac — macOS's built-in Archive Utility doesn't handle 7z. The free Keka or The Unarchiver opens it in one click — and if the recipient can't install anything, ZIP was the right format for them all along.
  • My ZIP is password-protected and the conversion fails — The contents can't be read without the password, so remove the protection locally and upload an unencrypted copy. The new 7z is written without a password; re-protect it in 7-Zip afterwards if needed — its AES-256 is stronger than classic ZIP encryption anyway.
  • I uploaded the wrong files — how do I remove them from your servers? — You don't need to do anything: uploads and converted results are deleted automatically after one hour and are never kept beyond that.
