7Z compresses better than ZIP but requires 7-Zip (or compatible software) to extract. Converting to ZIP trades some size efficiency for universal extractability — every OS opens ZIP natively.

Why convert 7Z to ZIP?
- Open archives on systems without 7-Zip installed.
- Send to non-technical recipients who only know ZIP.
- Required by upload forms or email systems that reject 7Z.
What is the difference between 7Z and ZIP?
| 7Z | ZIP | |
|---|---|---|
| Compression algorithm | LZMA/LZMA2 — among the strongest general-purpose compressors | Deflate — quicker, but noticeably larger output |
| Built-in OS support | None; needs 7-Zip, Keka, or a compatible tool | Native in Windows, macOS, Linux, iOS, and Android |
| Encryption | AES-256, with optional filename hiding | AES supported; legacy ZipCrypto still common and weak |
| Openness | Open format from the 7-Zip project | Open de facto standard since 1989 |
| Best for | Personal backups and shrinking large datasets | Sending files to anyone, upload portals, email |
Does converting 7Z to ZIP lose quality?
Plan for the ZIP to be larger, and for the growth to depend on the contents. Source code, logs, CSV exports, and office documents give LZMA the most to work with, so those archives can grow by a third or more once repacked with Deflate. Folders of JPEGs, MP4s, or nested archives barely move. The trade is deliberate: ratio is exchanged for an archive that opens on any machine with no setup.
Nothing inside gets reorganised: folder hierarchy, filenames, and modification times reproduce in the ZIP as they appeared in the 7z, deeply nested paths and non-Latin names included. What doesn't translate is 7z's solid-block layout — ZIP compresses each file independently, which is part of why it comes out bigger but also why any tool can later reach individual entries quickly.
7z stores a checksum for every file, and each one is verified as the archive is unpacked for repacking — corruption from an interrupted download surfaces as a failed conversion, not a quietly damaged ZIP. If the conversion completes, the ZIP holds exactly the files the 7z did. No account is needed, and both the upload and the result are removed automatically after an hour.
What can go wrong converting 7Z to ZIP?
- My 7z has a password and the conversion won't run — Encrypted archives can't be unpacked without the password, so conversion stops before it starts. Re-save an unencrypted copy with 7-Zip locally, convert that, and remember the output ZIP carries no protection of its own.
- The upload is rejected as too large — Free conversions accept files up to 50 MB, measured on the upload itself. A 7z near the limit still converts — just expect the resulting ZIP to be bigger than the source, since Deflate compresses less tightly.
- The download link stopped working — Converted files are deleted from our servers after one hour, links included. Nothing is retained beyond that — simply run the conversion again to get a fresh copy.
